Paola Viesi

We work with pastoralists in the Horn of Africa to support environmental resource management, livelihood sustainability, access to knowledge and information, peace building and rights based work. We promote a positive view of pastoral economies, their social institutions and their indigenous knowledge.

Our aims and values:

Our aim is to assist mobile pastoralists in the Horn of Africa to strengthen their livelihood, reach their economic potential, achieve peace within their communities, have a voice in civil society and access the services and human rights they are entitled to.

Our mission is to strengthen customary law, resource management and livestock production; Support the voice of those most excluded such as women and children; Facilitate effective dialogue between pastoralists and with their governments; and support local partners with access to information, funding and capacity building.

Our vision is that pastoralists are recognized as knowledgeable and productive and that they are assisted in a way that supports their own ideas for future development and governance.

Our work:

We plan to launch a new Rights, Peace and Pastoralist Livelihoods Project in Kenya and Somalia in April 2010.

Over the past 15 years we have been supporting a range of different community projects based in Mandera district, NE Kenya and Gedo region, Somalia.

We are building strong relationships with our African partners and making new links with others that work with pastoralists in the Horn of Africa.

We have participated in pastoralist gatherings in Kenya to learn more from pastoralists about how to support peace building and promoting pastoralist voice.
