Pastoralist Gatherings in the Horn

South Omo/ Tukana gathering

Following the pastoralist gathering in Koora earlier this year, pastoralists from south Omo area, Ethiopia and Tukana district, Kenya will be meeting to hold follow-on discussions about peace building. They will also be joined by Toposa representatives from South Sudan, the Karamajong from Uganda and representatives from government departments.

Borana and Gabbra peace gathering in Marsabit

Senior Borana and Gabbra elders are preparing for a peace gathering in Marsabit that will take place in February or March next year. The gathering will be jointly funded and organised by the Boran and Gabbra communities and supported by the Kenya and Ethiopian governments.

The Pastoralist Assistance aims to provide a positive picture of pastoralists and pastoralism to both the public and to all those working with pastoralists. The pastoralists that we work with are proud and knowledgeable people and in many areas of the drylands of the horn pastoralists are actively pursuing a productive livelihood. They do not want to be constantly viewed as victims and believe that the media generally portrays them as poor, vulnerable and dependant on food aid. We therefore concentrate our news and events on positive work and events and stories concerning pastoralists.
